As a new film photographer at the time, I was thrilled to capture Cayla and Matt’s photos against the breathtaking backdrop of Newport’s beautiful beach. Even on a dreadfully cold day. There’s something undeniably romantic about the crashing waves, the salty breeze, and the golden light of a beach at sunset. Add in a love story with a film camera and it doesn’t get any better for me!
We kicked off the session just before golden hour. The soft light casted a magical glow over the beach. Cayla and Matt strolled hand in hand along the shoreline, their laughter intertwined with the sound of the waves gently crashing against the shore. With each frame, I look to capture genuine connection between the couples in front of my lens, allowing their natural chemistry to shine through.
For the second part of the session, we ventured to Newport’s iconic Cliff Walk. As the sun slowly lowered on the pathway, Cayla and Matt powered through the cold to get beautiful waves gliding onto the shore as their background. The film photography added a timeless quality to the images. To me, film evokes a sense of nostalgia and romance that perfectly complemented the coastal setting.
As the evening ended, we captured a few final shots as Cayla and Matt watched the sunset together. Their silhouettes framed against the colorful sky at the marina. The sun going down behind the boats produced some of my favorite images of the evening.
As a film photographer, there’s something truly special about using film as a medium. The softness, the texture, the way it captures light and color in a way that digital simply can’t replicate. For Cayla and Matt, opting for a film photo session was the perfect choice. We created timeless, heirloom-quality images that they will be able to treasure for years to come.
Newport’s stunning coastline will always be a place I recommend as a background for photos. Even on a freezing evening in February, we captured moments of pure joy, laughter, and love—moments that they would carry with them long after the sun had set on this beautiful day by the sea.
I have no doubt that the memories we captured on film in Newport, Rhode Island, a quintessential New England town, will serve as a beautiful reminder of the love they share.
